Headaches Q & A

What are headaches?

Headaches are pains that usually affect part of your head, like your temples, forehead, or even the upper part of your neck. Sometimes, they’re mild enough that you can go about your day without much issue. However, headaches can also be severe or even debilitating at times.

There are a few different types of headaches, including tension headaches, cluster headaches, and thunderclap headaches. Tension headaches are common and cause you to feel pain on both sides of your head. You might describe the sensation as having a tight band around your head.

Cluster headaches frequently occur for 4-12 weeks at a time. Between these clusters are periods of remission, when you have no headaches or other symptoms.

Thunderclap headaches have a very quick onset and cause severe pain. They may indicate a very serious underlying medical issue, like a brain aneurysm.

What is the difference between headaches and migraines?

Headaches and migraines are very similar but not quite the same. Some consider migraines to be a type of headache. However, migraines tend to be more severe, and they cause other symptoms beyond pain in the head. Migraines usually cause throbbing pain on just one side of the head, but the pain can switch sides during an episode.

At the height of a migraine, you might get other symptoms like:

  • Light headedness
  • Nausea
  • Lights in your vision
  • Light sensitivity
  • Sound sensitivity
  • Vision loss
  • Vomiting

If you get migraines at least 15 days out of the month, you have chronic migraines and might need more intensive treatment.

How are headaches and migraines treated?

The team at Weingrow Wellness & Medical Center works with you to explore the possible causes and contributing factors influencing your headaches, which can help them plan a treatment for you.

One way to prevent headaches and migraines is to find out what triggers them. Over time, especially if you record information about your headaches and migraines, you might notice some patterns as to what causes them, like particularly stressful days at work or certain foods. Once you identify triggers, you can avoid them.

Weingrow Wellness & Medical Center might also recommend or prescribe medications to take in order to manage the pain. Some preventive medications, like botulinum toxin injections, are also available for chronic migraines.

If headaches or migraines affect you weekly or even daily, call Weingrow Wellness & Medical Center for an evaluation or book an appointment online today.
